Last newsletter I talked a bit about the Regenerative Future Summit. One of the organizing concepts of the Summit was the "The Meadows Memo" [PDF], an ambitious strategy memo collaboratively developed under the auspices of Leading for Wellbeing.  It seeks to define an alternative to "neoliberalism", instead imagining a "different future: an economy that works for 100% of humanity, and preserves the ecological systems necessary to sustain life."

The concepts mesh pretty nicely with the framework we've been developing to motivate a global movement to a regenerative society. The memo begins to flesh out 10 "strategic building blocks" -- sector-focused strategies.  Each 1 to 2 page building block includes a brief description, a goals statement, a definition of success, and lists of pathways for progress and sample actions.

For example the "Transform Business" building block sets a goal of rooting "the narrative in business so that companies implement regenerative practices enhancing human and natural capital in all of their activities." It suggests actions like network building, events, and metrics development.

The Meadows Memo explicitly uses the Powell Memo as  both a model and (perhaps mythical) foil in its critique of modern western society. One of the opportunities for the next generation of this thinking is to integrate a regenerative framing - a focus on opportunities, abundance, mutual reliance, etc. - in place of this traditional blame and problem-oriented focus. 

Let's use a regenerative narrative for a regenerative vision of our regenerative future.

We are very early in the process of defining what it means to build a regenerative society. While the terminology will continue to evolve, we're convinced the ideas are directionally correct. Now we are studying, testing, plotting, and building interest, support, and resources.

Thus this newsletter, which will come out every few weeks with information about RASA - narrating our work - along with brief observations and links to related materials exploring innovation and the regenerative economy.
